Dresden Breslau 2011
Jim Marsded from Gigglepin UK, and Wayne Smith, of Smithi Engineering in Australia teamed up again, to tackle this amazing event. Long stages, heaps of driving time, a real mixture of fast Safari style drive, tight twisting forest tracks, open mogul runs with 1-2m deep moguls for km’s after km’s, then into river crossing, swamps, water meadows and nasty bogs.
This event has a bit of everything, all done by road book, with GPS, distance and bearing runs, mixed into the road book notes. We had cars, bikes, Side by Sides, Mogs and trucks all racing at the same time on the same tracks. Bikes and Side by Sides had an hour head start, but the trucks and Mogs mixed it up with the cars. There where 179 cars, another 100 bikes and about 100 trucks and mogs, it was a massive field. The event catered for 1500 people at dinner each night, plus supplied a bar, with great German beer on tap every night and bratwurst snags cooking beside the bar.
We finished 5th, threw everything we had at the track, and worked hard just to finish. A great experience, I was the 1st Aussie to race in the event and learnt heaps. A big thanks to the team of Jim, Iain, Johnathan, and Mel for helping get the vehicle and us to the finish.
